Questions And Answers On Acne

David asks…

How long does it take to see positive results from Minocycline?

About a year ago after shaving my skin broke out below my mouth. Ever since, I have not been able to shave that spot without a SEVERE breakout. I have tried everything and have seen a few doctors. Some things supress the breakouts, but nothing has cured it. I went to a new doctor the other day and she prescribed me Minocycline. The very next day, I started breaking out all over, not in just the normal spot. I have read on the web that my acne may get worse before I see results.

Has this happened to anyone else? And if so, how long until it started getting better again? Thanks – this sucks.

Ben answers:

Minocycline is used for help to get rid of acne. Try washing your face there as well at least one a day. And yes the acne will get worse before it starts to work. Make sure you take it twice a day (if prescribed). I would also suggest asking your doctor for Differn. If used with the minocycline, it can really help.

Mandy asks…

Accutane made my Acne MUCH worse!?

My acne was never bad. It was more on the Mild to moderate side, and my skin was always extremely oily. However, I was prescribed Accutane (30mg/Day, I am 5’7 and 140 lbs) because of the oiliness of my skin and how it was slowly gaining resistance to everything that I was doing to it already (Tazorac Gel M,W,F,Sat., Duac Every other day, Clindagel in the AM, Minocycline every day). I started taking Accutane 12 days ago, and now my skin got MUCH worse! It honestly has never been this bad, and it hurts! I know that it may get worse before it gets better, but I feel like shit. I hate looking at myself in the mirror now. All I see is ugly, and I feel like shit. My sophomore Semi Formal is coming up too in 11 days, and I can’t let my date see me like this. I have been told so many times that my skin will get worse before it gets better, however it STAYS in the worse phase for MONTHS. I feel ugly, and my self confidence has withered to nothing. I didn’t even go to school yesterday (Monday) because of how I didn’t want people to see me. I am pretty popular, but I hate looking at myself. All my friends have perfect skin, and I feel like the ugly duckling. I am sick of having to wait WEEKS before my skin gets better. What do I do?
Yes my Doc told me all the side effects, but… My face is already DRY. How am I still getting Acne when my skin is dry already? And peeling?!

Ben answers:

Didn’t your doctor explain possible side effects of this medication before they gave it to you? As with most acne medications things get worse before they get better. Just stick it out for a month or two and your face should start to dry out and clear up.

Lynn asks…

Apo Minocycline good for acne?

I was wondering if any of you are taking Apo Minocycline for acne and finding it actually making your skin worse or is it just how it works? I know some products tend to let all your pimples come out before clearing them. Please help! Also, if you have any suggestions for acne clearing treatments, let me know!

Thanks =)

Ben answers:

There is research that buttress the acne-fighting ability of minocycline.

Google “Minocycline for acne vulgaris: efficacy and safety.” to read publish research.

Regardless of sex, melanin content, age, gender, weather, mood, time, or location of acne breakouts, the treatment protocol for acne is the same.

In short, acne is caused by a combination of factors including bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells. Bacteria feed off sebum, which produce inflammatory by-products. Sebum and dead skin cells stick together and form clogs.

When it comes to selecting your cosmetic or skin care products, you should base your selection primarily on your SKIN TYPE. There are 16 different skin types! If you are unsure of your complete skin type, then take the questionnaire developed by world-renown clinical researcher, board-certified dermatologist, and author of the book, “The Skin Type Solution”, Dr. Leslie Baumann. Register first then take the quiz. Afterward, visit the specified forum that is tailored to your unique Baumann skin type for product recommendations and discussions about your skin concerns, in particular, acne.

In order to TREAT and CONTROL acne, you will need well-designed routine:

1)A well-formulated water-soluble cleanser to remove oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and makeup.
2)A well-formulated, pH-adjusted, beta-hydroxy acid exfoliant with salicylic acid in 1-2% concentration to reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and exfoliate on top of skin and within the pore lining to unclog any plug. If you are allergic to salicylic acid (or aspirin), then your alternative can be an alpha-hydroxy acid such as glycolic acid or mandelic acid.
3)A well-formulated benzoyl peroxide medication in 2.5-10% concentration to kill acne bacteria. The lower the concentration the lower the risk of side effects including dryness, peeling, redness, stinging, etc.
4)A well-formulated, matte-finish, and lightweight sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater to protect your skin from UV-inflammation, which can exacerbate acne, as well as prevent skin cancer. It is imperative to reapply after swimming, excessive perspiration, or every 2 hours for optimal photoprotection, especially in the sun.

NOTE: a well-formulated product usually contains low fragrance or is free of fragrance and dyes.

Results can take up to a few weeks to 1-2 months with diligence, compliance, and patience. If this conservative routine is ineffective, then you should consult with a board-certified dermatologist for a topical prescription and/or in-office light/laser therapies. The last resort for acne is isotretinoin (formerly known as Accutane).

Davina asks…

I’ve gone to the Dermatologist 2 times now and still having serious acne!!?

Ok, I went to the Dermatologist last year because of I had tried absolutely EVERYTHING – including ProActive and all of the other over-the-counter brands – ALL OF IT! And so, she prescibed me to Minocycline and some of this cream stuff to put on every morning and night. It helped for a little while, then I started getting breakouts again, so I finally stopped (I was on it for like over three months, so you can’t say I didn’t stick to it). And I have “underground zits” btw, and those are the REALLY PAINFUL kind, and the ickiest and yuckiest kind to have so uh, YAH. I’m sick of it.
So I recently went again a little over a month ago, and she prescribed me to Minocycline AGAIN and then gave me some RETIN-A. I have been on this stuff for about a month now, and yes she did say my acne would get worse before it got better, but that I should see results soon. And NO. Nothing my acne is the exact same. I have blackheads, whiteheads, underground zits, and oily skin. NOTHING IS WORKING AND WE CAN’T AFFORD TO GO TO THE DERMATOLOGIST EVERY MONTH SO WHAT THE HECK CAN I DO??? I am sick of it!!! I’m 14 yrs old and NONE of my friends have zits. It’s so embarrassing and so painful!

Please, I am in desperate need of your help. What should I do? We called the Dermatologist two times in the past week now, and she just keeps saying “Well, we have you an appointment in three months. It should start working okaaaaay remember it gets worse before it gets better.” But nothing has happened.

WHAT SHOULD I DO??? I CANNOT GO THROUGH THIS ANY LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. Yah I went over all the procedures. I’m using a gentle, mild cleanser (Dove), and I wait two hours to moisturizer. Her rules and I’m following them. I don’t what the heck’s wrong here.
Uh, Dude, I ALWAYS wash my hands and face! Duh. Okay you obviously do not know what it is like! I am beautiful – I would always get compliments of how beautiful and pretty I am but now with my acne, all I get is “Oh, cute shoes.” That’s it. Pimples have ruined my freakin life. I can’t chillax any more.

Ben answers:

Seriously, chilax. Everyone has acne when they’re going through puberty. Zits are caused when something dirty gets under the skin. Try washing your hands and face. And never pop a zit! That just makes stuff worse. Hope this helps, good luck

Ben answers:

Use that stuff again, once it has cleared up almost, use Clearasil Stay Clear face wash, toner and a moisturizer. Buy the clearasil ultra stay clear acne kit, and buy clearasil stay clear pads, clearasil ultra sensitive face wash, and use every day, and you’ll be good.
Trust me.
